Tewkesbury Area Guide

Nestled on the confluence of the River Severn and the River Avon, Tewkesbury is a fabulous medieval market town in Gloucestershire, just 8 miles north of Cheltenham, surrounded by stunning country and riverside walks. The town sits on the borders of Worcestershire, and is known for its medieval and Tudor buildings.

Living in Tewkesbury

Despite its old-world buildings, Tewkesbury also boasts a treasure trove of independent shops, restaurants and cafes along the traditional high street, and other facilities include a new multi-million pound sports stadium, a state-of-the-art medical centre and the hugely popular Roses Theatre.

Things to do

For those looking for history and culture, you can’t go wrong with Tewkesbury Abbey. Thought to house the largest Romanesque crossing tower still in existence in Europe, Tewkesbury Abbey was first built in the 12th century and boasts three organs and 12 bells, all of which are still played today. Tewkesbury is also home to its own museum, documenting the history of the town, the Showborough House Sculpture Garden, and the Battle Trail.

Festivals

Much like the nearby town of Cheltenham, Tewkesbury holds its own festivals every year, including the Tewkesbury Winter Beer Festival (very fitting for the town that is home to Gloucestershire’s oldest pub, The Black Bear); a Medieval Festival in the summer; an annual Food & Drink festival in the grounds of the Abbey; and a Water Festival in the height of summer.

Making Tewkesbury your home

As well as all of its culture and history, Tewkesbury boasts a variety of styles and prices of property, from character cottages to modern family homes. As well as good schools, fantastic facilities and an abundance of events, the town is also quiet and homely, ideal for anyone looking to relocate.
